Dear Parents and Guardians,It is hard to believe, but we are entering the last week of the first quarter for the 2019-2020 school year! We have had a great beginning of the school year filled with prayer, inspired learning, and laughter. Staff and students continue to live out the charge from St. Ignatius to “Go and Set the World on Fire.”
Virtue of the month for November, Humility
During the month of November, students and staff will learn about the virtue of Humility, and the importance of accepting our limitations and what it means to be humble. Saints stories and current examples will be shared.
Innovation and Design Program
It is exciting to see that our new Innovation and Design Program has started. Students in grade 2 are actively learning about what causes food shortages around the globe which include a growing population, soil erosion and land shortages. Second graders will then be challenged to design a solution for today's farmers so that they can maximize land use, farm indoors, or possibly farm without soil. Using the design process of Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test, these students will strive to create a solution to this global crisis. Each grade will participate in this process in order to solve a real-world issue facing our community or the globe. I am looking forward to their creativity!
Confirmation Commissioning
Please join me in praying for our 7th graders who were commissioned last evening for Confirmation. During this year, they will undergo catechesis and engage in prayer as they prepare for this special sacrament. We are very proud of them.

Annual Halloween Parade for K through 8
Our annual parade will be at 2:00pm on Halloween, Thursday, October 31, which is less than a week away! We encourage creative costumes that promote a healthy imagination and fun, but since there is a parade, we ask that students do not wear masks, and should wear safe and secure shoes. We also ask that no weapons of any sort, including plastic look-a-likes, be brought to school. Costumes should be brought to school in a bag or backpack, and homeroom parents will be here to help with the celebration, but it is best if students are able to put on their costumes without assistance. All students and adults are encouraged to participate. Parents, grandparents and friends are invited to watch the parade which begins at 2:00pm (hopefully!) in the church parking lot.
Parent volunteers will receive their name tags on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week which will allow you entry into the school for assisting in the classroom. We thank you for your willingness to help.
Technology Reminders for Grades 6-7-8
Please keep in mind that the ipads students have been loaned for the school year are the property of St. Ignatius and managed on our part. This equipment should be used for educational purposes only as described in the 1:1 Student/Parent Agreement signed at the beginning of the school year. All apps that the students need are identified by our technical staff and then downloaded to the ipad by that staff. No other applications can be downloaded. It is important to mention that when students are at home and using your home internet, there is no filtering of content occurring unless you have configured it to run on your home internet connection. All internet for staff and students is filtered while at school, but at home that supervision is left to parents. An important role for all parents whose children have internet enabled devices is that they supervise them when using the internet. It is a good rule and practice that all internet devices be charged in a central location out of children’s bedrooms. For more helpful hints on internet safety, current apps used by children and how to supervise the use of social media, please visit https://awiredfamily.org/. MAGAZINE DRIVE 2019
It’s magazine drive time! Check out the information sheet included in your magazine packet that came today. All your favorite magazines, gifts, plus lots more are included!
Mystery envelopes will once again be awarded on the first two turn in days which are Tuesday, September 10 and Monday, September 16. Students earn a mystery envelope for every two points (2 online orders/donations or 4 paper orders) submitted by 9:00am on turn in day. See the information sheet within your packet for additional incentives including a LIMO RIDE for grades K-8 and an ice cream sundae party for preschoolers.
Midwest Community Fundraising will continue to be our vendor providing all your favorite magazines along with new items. Thank you in advance to the many volunteers helping out the next couple of weeks. We are encouraging orders to be made online to simplify the paperwork and chances for error. Students get credit for online orders as long as their name and homeroom have been included. Please remember that no student is expected to go door-to-door selling magazines. (Family and friends only.)
Keep in mind that a $20 donation counts as a magazine subscription/ 1 point. Details are in the packet. St. Ignatius earns 45% of the purchase price and of course 100% of cash donations stay here too. The proceeds from the sale are used for student enrichment and staff professional development.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
We are pleased to announce that we are continuing our After School Program for the 2019-2020 school year for students in Pre-K to grade 8. CALLING ALL GIRLS!
Building G.I.R.L.S. of courage, confidence, and character, who are making the world a better place. Girl Scouts have been preparing girls for a lifetime of leadership, success, and adventure, since 1912. While some people still think of us as just cookies, badges, campfires, and friendship bracelets, Girl Scouts are so much more. Girl Scouts are groundbreakers, big thinkers, and role models. Girl Scouts design robots, start garage bands, camp and improve their communities—and yes, they sell the best cookies on the planet. When she's a Girl Scout, she’s also a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader).
At St. Ignatius we have 18 troops, with over 200 girls registered. Last year at least 40 girls earned a religious award, which are presented during our Girl Scout Mass. Girls Scouts work with the parish and community, leads the Giving Tree at Christmas and volunteers at the parish festival.
If your daughter is interested in participating in Girl Scouts at St. I’s, please pick up an interest form in the parish office and return to the parish office by Monday, September 16. We are also always in need of adult helpers. If you are willing to help by being a leader, helper, or cookie mom, please mark that on your daughter's interest form, and you will be contacted with more information including which Troop # to register for. Please do not get on the Girl Scout website and register for a troop before you have been contacted.

Then American Heritage Girls awaits. American Heritage Girls (AHG) has been raising women of integrity for over 10 years at St. Ignatius. AHG is a Christian-based ministry where girls experience new challenges that teach service, team-building and leadership skills in a safe and fun environment.
American Heritage Girls is open to girls ages 5-18. We meet at the Loyola Center (formerly Hilvert Center at St. Ignatius) on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 3:30-5:15pm, September-May. Dignity Drive for Foster Children
Imagine just being removed from your home to live with strangers. You don't have time to pack your things and likely have to leave with only clothes on your back. As children are trying rebuild their life in a new environment with new people, their stress must be overwhelming. The last thing they should have to worry about are basic needs.
Please help us provide these very basic needs for foster children in our community. The 8th grade American Heritage Girls are collecting new socks and underwear, sizes children through adult XXL for children and teens in foster care.
A box for new socks and underwear will be available outside the parish office September 7-8. You may also contact an 8th grade girl in AHG or Michelle Korte at mkorte0731@gmail.com. All items will be given to foster children through Threads of Hope.

THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION (RCIA)
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is called RCIA. There are four phases including Inquiry, Catechumenate, Enlightenment, and Mystagogia. Until the Feast of Christ the King, the RCIA class is in the First Phase of Inquiry. The participants not baptized are called catechumens, whereas, the candidates are those that have been baptized and are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church. We cordially invite any parishioner to join the Faith Journey and attend the October classes to enrich your own faith life. The children are back in school, and it’s a good time to learn more about Scriptures and The Church. Come to one or all of them. Call Len Johansing @513-470-8886 to reserve a place for you! Here are some important reminders from our school nurse, Mrs. Reder:INJURIES: If your child has an injury that limits their participation in recess or gym, please let Mrs. Reder know right away. It is also helpful to get a doctor's note regarding activities especially when they are released from restrictions.
FLU VACCINE: Please get your flu vaccine from your doctor or local pharmacy.
KEEPING YOUR CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL DUE TO ILLNESS:
1. Fever greater than 100.0 in the past 24 hours. Take their temperature without tylenol/ibuprofen in their system.
2. Diarrhea or vomiting in the past 24 hours, with or without fever.
3. Communicable disease such as strep throat, pink eye that require 24 hours of antibiotics before returning to school.

They placed 1st out of 45 teams and special congrats to Jackson R. who ranked 3rd overall out of 950 students from Southwest Ohio who participated. Congratulations to each of you on your determination to finish and hard work! For several days the team was neck and neck with teams from Our Lady of Visitation. The newest schedule was sent home with students this past Monday. If you have not received one, parents should stop by the church office for a copy or email Mrs. Ryland Koppenhoefer at rkoppenhoefer@sainti.org to have it sent electronically to you. Many of you have been randomly scheduled for the first time on the weekends out of necessity. Therefore, it is important to have a copy of the schedule and to look it over thoroughly and mark your calendars accordingly. It is your responsibility to find a sub for those times when you are not able to serve on a date that you are scheduled. Thank you for continuing to volunteer in this important ministry, and for filling in when needed.

Chess Club 2020 is set to begin Friday, January 10, and all levels of players kindergarten through 8th grade are welcome. We will meet on Fridays after school until 4:30pm through March. University of Cincinnati sorority, Phi Sigma Rho, is partnering with the Society of Women Engineers to put on an event called Dream Day Cincinnati. This event is a free workshop for girls in 6th to 8th grade to learn about different STEM careers, and will be taking place at UC on Saturday, November 16. Students will get to participate in activities put on by GE Aviation, Siemens, P&G, UC Engineering Faculty, and TriHealth to learn from inspiring female role models.

Please save and bring in all caps and lids which will be collected, and once the troop collects enough caps, (their goal is at least 250 pounds) these will be recycled and turned into a bench which will then be placed on the school/parish grounds. Please refer to the attached flyer for approved lids and caps, and send them in to school throughout the year. This is a wonderful opportunity to help your child and the troop learn about caring for the earth and green living!
