STRAIGHT A'S FOR 8TH GRADE
Alyssa M. was inadvertantly left off last week's list. Congratulations, Alyssa!
READ, READ, READ!
At this time of the year, I like to take a quick minute and encourage all parents and students to read, read, read over the summer. One of the most important activities for students to do over the summer should be reading. Studies are showing that if students continue to read consistently over the summer, the "summer slide," (a decline in reading ability and other academic abilities due to summer vacation), is diminished or eliminated altogether. Listed below are some simple ways to promote reading over the summer. Please join the staff and me in encouraging or mandating reading for all students over the summer.
5 Facts to Know About Summer Reading:
(1) All it Takes is Four: By reading four or more books over the summer, kids can avoid the infamous "summer slide" or what we know as the gap in academic skills when returning to school in the fall.
(2) Let Them Choose: The research indicates that young people are 91% more likely to finish books they choose themselves. Sometimes, the latest Newberry award winner may move them, or they may be more interested in the classics from a generation or two ago.
(3) Top of the Tests: Kids who read a million words a year score in the top 2% on standardized tests. A million words may sound like an overwhelming amount, but it's only about 25 average-length novels.
(4) Big Vocabularies: Kids learn 4,000-12,000 new words every year by reading books. One can conclude that 3 months without books can make a huge difference in test scores and vocabularies.
Have your children take the Accelerated Reader Quiz over the books read at our school AR website. This provides the staff with information that can be used in the fall.

Online Resources Available
Some parents have asked that MyOn and Freckle remain available for the summer. Students can access these online resources for reading and math through their Clever accounts. This is another great way to limit the effects of the “summer slide.”

INCOMING 8th GRADERS
The Archdiocese has chosen a new test for high school placement. The high schools will no longer use the High School Placement Test (HSPT). Riverside Testing Company has created a new version of the IOWA test just for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. There is no test prep book or materials for this test.
PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR 2nd GRADERS
Please continue to keep our 2nd graders in your prayers as they will receive their First Eucharist beginning next week. We are very happy for them and their families.
